U.S. Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) (top) and Majora Carter (bottom), executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, were two of many the inspirational and informative keynote speakers during the 6th Annual BALLE Conference on June 5-7 at Boston University.
On June 5-7 at Boston University, the Sustainable Business Network hosted the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies' 6th Annual Conference. Nearly 500 people from throughout the U.S. and Canada attended this international event, which was this year's most powerful gathering of local business, government, and non-profit leaders working to build community wealth and well-being.
The theme was "Grow Deep: Business Leaders Building Strong Economies." Transforming our economy to more localized production and distribution by green and locally owned, independent businesses is key to addressing the challenges of climate change, peak oil and resource depletion.

On April 23 at Boston City Hall, Mayor Tom Menino hosted the official launch of the new Sustainable Business Leader Program (SBLP), a partnership between the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Boston (SBN) and the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA). SBLP is funded in part by a $50,000, two-year grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
“SBLP is leading the way to help small and mid-sized businesses to become more economically and environmentally sustainable,” SBLP Director Jennifer Boudrie
"Based on recommendations, each business can adopt an action plan and have access to resources to become more sustainable. SBLP will monitor the implementation of the plan during the year and at the end of the program will prepare a report with best practices to help many more businesses."
The SBLP website is www.SustainableBusinessLeader.org.
SBLP is part of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Boston, a 501(c)3 organization, which is also the umbrella for “Local First” campaigns that support local businesses in our communities.
